Robert Louis ‘Bob’ Fosse (June 23, 1927 – September 23, 1987)<\/p><\/div>\n

Susan’s thoughts on Michael Jackson have got me thinking about 20th century dance and choreography, and it hasn’t taken long for my thoughts in this line to land upon Robert Louis Fosse, a\/k\/a Bob Fosse, a man whose dance style: sexual, stylized, cynical, exciting, has had and continues to have an incalculable influence on the worlds of dance, of music, and of pop-culture generally.<\/p>\n

Fosse, famed as a director as well as a choreographer, and as both <\/i>for some of the best-known plays\/movies of recent decades, was born near the summer solstice, on June 23, 1927, and he died too young, in 1987 at age 60. We\u2019ll blow out his birthday candles in his absence.<\/p>\n

He died of a heart attack in a hotel room just as his musical, Sweet Charity<\/i>, was opening at the National Theatre nearby.<\/p>\n

21 Years of Sweet Charity<\/h3>\n

Here\u2019s a clip from Sweet Charity<\/a> that bears all the marks of Fosse\u2019s distinctive style. Sweet Charity<\/i> had been around for twenty years itself by the time of that D.C. opening night. It premiered on Broadway in January 1966 (after a tryout in Detroit, Michigan). That first Broadway run continued for 608 performances, and was nominated for nine Tony Awards. Fosse was its choreographer and director.<\/p>\n

The composer for the songs of Sweet Charity,<\/i> including the best remembered of these, \u201cHey, Big Spender,\u201d was Cy Coleman<\/a>, the lyricist was Dorothy Fields. <\/a> The book was Neil Simon\u2019s, and they were all happily ripping off Frederico Fellini\u2019s Nights of Cabira<\/i>.<\/a><\/p>\n

\"sweet-charity\"Fosse was the choreographer again when Sweet Charity<\/i> was remade for Hollywood, as a 1969 movie starring Shirley MacLaine and John McMartin. As a financial proposition for Universal Pictures, it was a disaster: it cost Universal $20 million to make, and the company recovered only $8 million of that at the box office.<\/p>\n

But the critics and the industry itself had a high opinion of this movie. It was nominated for three Academy Awards and one Golden Globe. The Golden Globe nomination was for MacLaine\u2019s performance, the Oscar nominations included one for Best Score\/Adaptation.<\/p>\n

One reviewer, Addison Verrell of Boxoffice Magazine<\/a>, called it \u201cone of those pathos-comedies about love\u2019s labors lost that give Kleenex stockholders reason to rejoice\u201d \u2013 a chick flick, if you will, but one where the \u201ctuneful score, razzle-dazzle choreography and \u2026 tarty ladies\u201d will keep the men in the audience interested as well.<\/p>\n

Fosse was again choreographer\/director for the 1986 Broadway revival, with Debbie Allen and Michael Rupert as the female and male leads. This production won the Tony for best revival, and led to the DC opening with which we began, the one that coincided with Fosse\u2019s demise.<\/p>\n

In the spirit of old-time show business, \u201cthe show must go on.\u201d And the show did go on<\/a> that day. The cast didn\u2019t receive news of Fosse\u2019s sudden death until after their final curtain that night and their standing ovation.<\/p>\n

Fosse was doing much else in those final twenty years of his life, other than shepherding various productions of Sweet Charity<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Life is a Cabaret, Ol\u2019 Chum<\/h3>\n

Harold Prince<\/p><\/div>\n

He had a huge success with the movie Cabaret,<\/i> for example. This was loosely based on a 1966 Broadway musical of the same name. Fosse had had nothing to do with the stage version of Cabaret:<\/i> that was directed by Harold Prince (portrayed on the right) and it was choreographed by Ron Field.<\/p>\n

But Fosse did his own thing with the movie. Here\u2019s Joel Gray getting things started.<\/a><\/p>\n

Not only did Cabaret<\/i> win the Academy Award for 1972, it did so by beating out some very formidable competition, Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s The Godfather.<\/i><\/p>\n

Cabaret<\/i> as a movie starred Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles. The underlying material goes back through many incarnations to the novella \u2013 or a loosely connected group of stories \u2013 Goodbye to Berlin<\/i> by Christopher Isherwood, first published in 1939.<\/p>\n

\"goodbye-to-berlin\"<\/a>It is a semi-autobiographical account of Isherwood\u2019s own time in the titular city, where he lived from autumn 1930 to early 1933. It has a very pretentious opening. The first paragraph describes the street Isherwood could see from his window, and the second paragraph of the book begins, \u201cI am a camera with its shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Well, sorry \u2026 but nobody is a camera. And even a camera isn\u2019t a passive receptacle. If he had actually photographed that street for us with a real camera the result would still have been a work of selection and thus of choice, of activity. No less so than a dance routine is a stylized presentation of human movement.<\/p>\n

Yet Isherwood immortalized Goodbye to Berlin<\/a> with its second chapter or story, the one entitled simply \u201cSally Bowles,\u201d the one that introduces the young woman of that name, first seen \u201cdressed in black silk, with a small cape over her shoulders and a little cap like a page-boy\u2019s stuck jauntily on one side of her head.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chicago<\/h3>\n

Still, I digress. Our subject today is Mr. Fosse\u2019s legacy, and I cannot conclude even the briefest of forays into that subject without mentioning Chicago<\/i>, a cynical almost Brechtean musical about a woman who kills her lover and tries to frame her husband. The frame fails, and she is arrested \u2026 no, I won\u2019t spoil the ending for those who don\u2019t it.<\/p>\n

\"dance\"<\/a>On a specifically choreographical note, let me say that the \u201chappy hands,\u201d as well as the turn-inward knees of the still above, are characteristic features of Fosse\u2019s choreography, in Chicago<\/i> and elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Chicago<\/i> opened on Broadway at the 46th Street Theatre<\/a> on June 1, 1975 and ran for 923 performances, closing in late summer 1977. John Kander and Fred Ebb<\/a>, portrayed below, were responsible for the music and lyrics. Gwen Verdon played murderess Roxie Hart and Jerry Orbach played her lawyer, Billy Flynn.<\/p>\n

And with all due respect to the two wonderful on-camera performers here, it was Fosse who originated the motions.<\/p>\n

The Kander and Ebb lyrics include the life-is-fleeting lines:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn fifty years or so\/ It\u2019s gonna change you know\/ but now it\u2019s heaven\/nowadays.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen chuckles as she speaks those words (at 3:46 of this clip).<\/p>\n

We all have reason to chuckle at the least, in appreciation, as we contemplate Fosse\u2019s legacy, 86 years after his birth.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s leave the subject with a return to Sweet Charity<\/i>. The following clip is of Shirley MacLaine \u2013 at a moment when her character believes she\u2019s landed a heck of a sugar daddy \u2013 singing and dancing to \u201cIf My Friends Could See Me Now.\u201d You\u2019ll see that Fosse as director wasn\u2019t averse to using camera tricks for the big screen.<\/p>\n
