Gustave Charpentier was a French composer born in Dieuze, Moselle. With the assistance of a monetary contribution from the city community he started studying the violin at the conservatory. In 1881 he entered the Paris Conservatoire where he took lessons from the French composer Jules Massenet. Gustave won the the Prix de Rome for his cantata Didon. His biggest success was his opera Louise (1900) but his second opera Julien (1913) could not match the first success. After this he composed very little and began to deal with charities.
