Andrew Lloyd Webber

Andrew Lloyd Webber was born into a very musical family. His father, William Lloyd Webber, was also a composer. His mother, Jean Hermione (nee Johnstone) was a pianist and violinist. His younger brother has a solo career as a cellist – a career that a reporter for The Telegraph (UK) has described as “dazzling.” Even in this talented family, Andrew Lloyd is the stand-out, having won three Tony Awards, three Grammys, and an Oscar. He was knighted by the Queen in 1992 and created a life peer (Lord Lloyd Webber) in 1997. Among the best-loved songs to come out of Lord Lloyd Webber’s work for Broadway and the movies are: “Memory,” from Cats, “The Music of the Night” from The Phantom of the Opera, and “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina,” from Evita. Geoffrey Block has written that Webber often composes “in a language that frequently resides outside the traditional Broadway boundaries of Kern, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and their progeny.”
