Biography

Dvořák wrote in every form and is one of the few major composers whose chamber and piano music is genuinely approachable rather than merely famous.

The Slavonic Dances exist first as piano duets — that is what they were written as — and are among the best four-hand music there is, at a difficulty most pairs of amateurs can manage. The Humoresque in G flat is the piece everyone knows, and the piano original is harder than the violin arrangements suggest. The Cello Concerto is the central work of that instrument's repertoire.

His catalogue uses both opus numbers and B. numbers from Burghauser, and the opus numbers are notoriously unreliable — his publisher assigned them to make early works look like recent ones. Where the two disagree, the B. number is the honest one.
