Biography

Francis O'Neill (1848–1936) collected and published Irish traditional music. Born in Tralibane, County Cork, he left Ireland as a teenager and eventually settled in Chicago. He served in the city's police force from 1873 to 1905 and became chief of police in 1901.

His music collections helped transmit Irish repertoire to later generations. In 1931 he gave his library to the University of Notre Dame, where it became a resource for the study of Irish music and history. His annotations recorded such details as alternative tune names and sources. His role as a collector is distinct from authorship of the traditional tunes he preserved.
