Pop is where format matters more than repertoire. The song you want almost certainly exists in five different arrangements at five prices, and the difference between them is far larger than the difference between shops.
Everything here is in copyright, which has a practical consequence: there are no free legal editions, and sites offering them are unlicensed. What varies is which arrangement you buy and what it costs.

Buying guide
What to know before you buy
The five formats, and who each is for
Piano/vocal/guitar (PVG) is the default: melody line, lyrics, piano accompaniment, guitar chord symbols. It suits a singer with an accompanist, or a pianist who sings. Easy piano is a simplified re-arrangement, usually in a friendlier key. Piano solo puts the melody into the piano part so it works without a singer.
Guitar tab transcribes the recorded guitar part. A lead sheet gives melody, chords and lyrics on one page and nothing else — cheapest, most flexible, and useless if you wanted the actual arrangement. Retailers describe these inconsistently, so the arrangement labels on each result are worth reading before you buy.
Official editions and why keys differ
An official published edition is transcribed and licensed by the publisher who controls the song. It is not always identical to the record: published keys are frequently moved to something more singable or more playable, and arrangements simplify studio production into something two hands can manage.
If you need to play along with the recording, check the key before buying. If you are performing it yourself, the published key is often the better choice anyway.
Common questions
- Is pop sheet music available free?
- Not legally. Pop repertoire is in copyright, so every legitimate edition is a paid, licensed one. Sites offering free downloads of current songs are operating without a licence.
- Why is the published key different from the recording?
- Publishers often transpose to a more singable or more playable key, and arrangers simplify studio production into a practical two-hand part. If playing along with the record matters, check the stated key first.
- What is the cheapest way to buy a pop song?
- A single-song digital download, usually as a lead sheet or PVG. Collections cost more up front but work out cheaper per song if you want several from the same artist.
