Every saxophone is a transposing instrument and they do not transpose alike, so the first thing to establish about any edition is which member of the family it is written for. An alto part on a tenor is a fourth out.

What to know before you buy
E♭ and B♭ instruments
Alto and baritone are in E♭. Soprano and tenor are in B♭. Within a pair the parts are interchangeable an octave apart, so an alto part is readable on a baritone and a tenor part on a soprano. Across the pairs they are not.
Jazz fake books make this explicit by publishing separate E♭ and B♭ editions alongside the concert-pitch C one. Buying the C edition because it seemed like the default is the classic error.
Classical and jazz are separate catalogues
The classical saxophone literature — Glazunov, Ibert, Creston, the French school — is notated in full and played as written. Jazz material is mostly lead sheets and transcriptions, where the written page is a starting point. The same instrument, two entirely different kinds of publication, and a listing that says only "saxophone" tells you nothing about which you are getting.
