One Gymnopédie, or all three?
Satie composed the three piano Gymnopédies in early 1888. The first appeared that August as a supplement to La Musique des familles. The pieces share a musical family resemblance, but they are separate compositions: a listing for No. 1 does not necessarily include Nos. 2 and 3.
The publication and arrangement history also explains why the title appears outside the piano catalog. Debussy orchestrated the first and third pieces. A listing for an orchestral version, a solo instrumental transcription and Satie’s piano original can therefore refer to related music without containing the same score.
For the piano version, check the complete notation sample and editorial markings. A slow tempo and spare texture do not remove the need to control balance and sustained sound. Compare Satie’s catalog with the arrangement guide before selecting a version.
