What to know before you buy
Why editions disagree
Romantic composers left autographs, corrected proofs and multiple published first editions that frequently contradict each other — Chopin famously issued French, German and English editions simultaneously with different readings. Modern urtext editions choose between sources and document the choice; older editions simply picked one, often silently.
For study this matters less than teachers suggest. For performance and for exams, working from an edition your teacher knows saves a great deal of confusion about which slur or accidental is correct.
Free scans and their limits
The public-domain archives hold complete Romantic repertoire, usually as scans of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century collected editions. These are entirely usable for reading, and they were serious scholarly work in their day. What they carry is a century of editorial intervention — added fingering, redistributed hands, occasional recomposition — presented without comment.
For sight-reading and exploration they are excellent value. For a piece you will spend months on, a modern edition earns its price.

- Why do Chopin editions differ so much?
- He published in France, Germany and England simultaneously, and the three differ. Add autograph manuscripts and pupils' annotated copies and there is genuinely no single authoritative text. Modern urtext editions choose between sources and say which they chose.
- Is Romantic sheet music free?
- The music itself is out of copyright and freely available as period scans. Modern editions are copyrighted as editions and offer better texts, clearer engraving and documented editorial choices.
