Clefs, and why a page suddenly looks wrong

Cello music uses three clefs. Bass clef is the default. Tenor clef appears for higher passages to avoid ledger lines, and treble clef for higher still. Editions switch between them mid-piece without warning, and a passage that looks impossibly high is usually a clef change you have missed.

Older editions sometimes notate treble-clef passages an octave higher than they sound, following a nineteenth-century convention. Modern editions do not. This is a real source of confusion when reading a free public-domain scan alongside a modern one.

The Bach suites are a special case

No autograph manuscript of the six suites survives. Everything published descends from copies, of which Anna Magdalena Bach's is the most important, and those copies disagree about slurs in particular. The result is that editions differ substantially — some present a clean scholarly text, others a fully bowed performing version, and they are not reconcilable.

There is no single right answer, but there is a wrong purchase: buying a heavily marked edition when your teacher works from a scholarly one, or vice versa. Ask before buying, and treat the free scans — which are almost all old performing editions — as one voice among several rather than the text.

Method books and graded repertoire

Suzuki, the exam-board graded albums, and the standard studies — Dotzauer, Popper, Duport — make up most cello purchasing. The studies are out of copyright and freely available. The graded albums are not, and they are worth buying new because syllabi change and the current volume is the one your exam requires.
