What to know before you buy
Tuning decides everything
Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles are normally tuned GCEA, and the overwhelming majority of published material assumes it. The baritone is tuned DGBE — the top four strings of a guitar — so its chord shapes are entirely different and a standard chart will produce the wrong chords.
Within GCEA there is a further split. High G (re-entrant) tuning puts the fourth string above the third, which is the characteristic ukulele sound. Low G tunes it an octave down for a wider range. Chord charts work either way; fingerstyle tab often does not, because it relies on which octave that string sounds in.
Common questions
- Will guitar chord charts work on a ukulele?
- Not on a standard GCEA ukulele — the shapes and the resulting chords differ. A baritone ukulele, tuned DGBE, does match the top four guitar strings, so guitar shapes transfer there.
- What is the difference between high G and low G?
- Whether the fourth string sounds above or below the third. High G is the traditional re-entrant sound. Chord charts work with either; fingerstyle arrangements usually assume one specific choice.
