Clair de lune and its place in the suite
Clair de lune is the third movement of Debussy’s four-movement Suite bergamasque. The suite appeared in 1905, although Debussy marked the proofs with the earlier date 1890. That distinction matters when a catalog gives a single year: composition and publication are different events.
For a pianist, the first buying decision is scope. A separate edition of Clair de lune contains the movement; a complete Suite bergamasque also includes the Prélude, Menuet and Passepied. An arrangement for another instrument is a further, separate choice. Check the instrumentation and contents rather than relying on the familiar title.
