String Quartet sheet music

Score and parts

The usual product is score and parts: one score plus separate violin I, violin II, viola and cello parts. That is what a quartet needs.

A study score alone is a reading copy — useful, cheap, and no use at a rehearsal. Free public-domain sources frequently offer both, but not always in the same download, and the parts are the ones worth checking for.

The viola part is in alto clef. Arrangements sold for amateur groups sometimes provide a treble-clef alternative; the standard repertoire never does.

Arrangements for events

A large share of what sells here is arrangements — pop songs, film music, wedding processionals — rather than the classical repertoire. These are properly arranged for four string players and are usually easier than the original repertoire, which is deliberate: they exist to be played well after one rehearsal.

Copyright applies to the song and the arrangement both, so these are rarely free, and a free copy of a current pop arrangement is unlikely to be licensed.

What is free

Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Dvořák and everything else before roughly 1930 is out of copyright, scores and parts, and public-domain archives hold complete sets. For the standard repertoire there is genuinely no need to pay unless you want modern engraving and edited bowings — which, for anything you intend to perform, are worth having.
