The Flower Song, from an opera that was called a failure

Don José's aria from Act II of Carmen, first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 3 March 1875. He has been arrested for letting Carmen escape, and sings about the flower she threw at him, which he kept in prison. It ends on a sustained high B flat that Bizet marked pianissimo — a direction many tenors ignore, because singing it quietly at the end of the aria is genuinely hard.

The premiere was poorly received; the theatre's management thought the subject indecent for a family house. Bizet died three months later, aged 36, without seeing the work become one of the most performed operas ever written.

For buyers: this is one of the standard tenor audition arias, and it exists in the original French and in singing translations. Editions differ over the final note's dynamic and over whether to print the optional alternative ending, so it is worth checking which your teacher or accompanist expects.
