The published rag behind the familiar tune

John Stark published Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag in 1899. The Library of Congress describes it as an example of classic rag form, with repeated sections built around distinct themes. That structure makes a complete score useful for understanding the piece beyond its recognizable opening.

Before choosing an edition, establish whether it is the piano original or an easier arrangement. Compare the key, bass pattern and full sequence of sections in the sample. A shortened teaching version may serve a particular lesson, but it should not be mistaken for the complete original simply because the title matches.

A date attached to a library scan may describe that copy’s publication, rather than the first appearance of the composition. Read the item record alongside the historical account. Find more Scott Joplin sheet music, or compare the contents of piano songbooks.
